Naval engineers are responsible for the design, planning, projection and construction of all water craft, including boats, oil platforms and even offshore wind farms. Naval engineering covers such functions as the development of creative projects for sea craft and floating material, the technical development of the design and construction phases and the management of production centres (boat yards). Furthermore, this field of activity covers the tasks of maintenance and repair.
Nowadays, naval engineers are characterised by their high degree of versatility, with their knowledge extending to such fields as the generation and transportation of electrical energy, the manufacture and installation of naval motors and dynamic metallic structures, etc.
Up until the 18th-century, such engineers were known as "constructors" in Spain. As of 1770, they became known as "marine -or hydraulic- engineers", before finally being recognised by the term "naval engineers".
Famous naval engineers include Thomas Andrews, designer of RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic, and William Francis Gibbs, responsible for the design of such vessels as SS America, SS Leviathan and SS United States. Mention must also be made of Francisco Gautier, who succeeded Jorge Juan as the engineer responsible for the construction of vessels for the Spain's Royal Armada, and Romero Landa, one of the greatest naval engineers of his time.

Aitamar Group
AITAMAR GROUP had a modest beginning. In 1981, the group's manager and founder, Mª del Carmen Peiró Spiteri, employed the experience gained through her family's extensive professional sailing and maritime tradition to create AITAMAR, S.L. as a small company providing services to leisure boat owners. The company was focussed on providing consultancy and administrative services related to its clients' vessels.

This modest company soon obtained the best possible reward: the satisfaction and the fidelity of its clientele. Such recognition led to a widening of the firm's objectives and the creation in 1987 of TEKNAMAR, S.L. as an associated naval engineering company.

The two companies grew and matured together, incorporating a young, highly professional and cohesioned staff that has since witnessed the profound changes that have taken place in the nautical sector both in Spain and throughout Europe during the last 30 years.

As a consequence of holding such vast experience and knowledge of all the aspects affecting leisure navigation, an international demand was created for the companies' qualified services, which in turn led to the extension of the companies' services to cover - and the accumulation of knowledge about - the specific characteristics of the different European maritime registers. Such experience facilitates the complex tasks related to the importation, registration and transfer of foreign vessels and their adaptation to the European construction and classification standards.

With this solid base, and in response to the demand of 10,000 clients accustomed to the companies' efficiency and professionalism, 2006 saw the creation of AITAMAR YACHTS, S.L., a boat maintenance and repair company characterised by the same levels of quality as the group's other firms. The close relationships existing between the group's companies facilitate the provision of an agile, dynamic and COMPREHENSIVE service covering all the navigational requirements of our clients, who are able to enjoy their vessels with the minimum of preoccupations.

AITMAT GROUP's untiring desire to extend and to promote it passion for the sea and navigation lies behind the group's latest project: AITAMAR U.S. INC., of whose activities and developments we will inform by means of this corporate website.

AITAMAR has been distinguished by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance and accredited by UKAS, in accordance with the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems standard as applicable to nautical consultancy and management. The group, furthermore, is a member of the National Association of Nautical Companies (ANEN).
