Naval engineers are responsible for the design, planning, projection and construction of all water craft, including boats, oil platforms and even offshore wind farms. Naval engineering covers such functions as the development of creative projects for sea craft and floating material, the technical development of the design and construction phases and the management of production centres (boat yards). Furthermore, this field of activity covers the tasks of maintenance and repair.
Nowadays, naval engineers are characterised by their high degree of versatility, with their knowledge extending to such fields as the generation and transportation of electrical energy, the manufacture and installation of naval motors and dynamic metallic structures, etc.
Up until the 18th-century, such engineers were known as "constructors" in Spain. As of 1770, they became known as "marine -or hydraulic- engineers", before finally being recognised by the term "naval engineers".
Famous naval engineers include Thomas Andrews, designer of RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic, and William Francis Gibbs, responsible for the design of such vessels as SS America, SS Leviathan and SS United States. Mention must also be made of Francisco Gautier, who succeeded Jorge Juan as the engineer responsible for the construction of vessels for the Spain's Royal Armada, and Romero Landa, one of the greatest naval engineers of his time.
